Something that has been on my mind lately is love and basically WHAT IS LOVE?

I listened to a Christian teaching recently and the speaker was saying how in the Greek language there are four different words used to explain love but in English there is only one, we use the same word to say “I love my dog” and “I love God”, and because of that the word love has lost its meaning.

One word for love in Greek is EROS (erotic), which can be defined as a passionate physical, emotional, sexual love that should only be shared by married couples, but in this current day and age this is the definition and example of love that is used, it is always self seeking and out for its own pleasure. we as a people have been deceived to believing that this is how we are to relate to one, love has lost all meaning and its all about SELF.

Another word for love in Greek is AGAPE this is a selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love, this is the love Jesus Christ has for his followers, the Love the Heavenly Father has and is for His Children, ALL HIS CHILDREN. This is not a “For Christians only” type of gift, but it is freely given to a people of every religion, race, gender, sex. God does not love one group of people more than another, He loves us all the same and it is not based on our performance, nothing we can do can make Him love us more or less, because it is in His nature to AGAPE, it is WHO and WHAT He is, and that has and never will change.

1 John 4:16 says “God is love (agape) and he who lives in love (agape), lives in God and God in Him”.

For me that verse speaks to the nature and character of who God PERFECTLY, and so if we are TRULY in God and Him in us, then we live in agape daily. We love without expecting anything in return (selfless), we love without expectations (unconditional), we choose daily to die to our self (sacrificial), and trust me there are days when it will not be easy, especially when it comes to loving loved ones, but God does not expect us to do it on our own its all comes down to ABIDING in Him DAILY and inviting the genius of geniuses the Holy Spirit into EVERY situation and circumstance and truly believing

Philippians 4:13 which states that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” .

It’s so sad how readily and often love is distorted. I wish our language had a stronger ability to separate out the ways ‘love’ is mis-defined, as well as the just the different types of love. Words are so powerful and we often fail to do love justice when we casually talk about loving our new nail polish as well as loving our child. I enjoyed reading your post, thanks 🙂
